- W2092248431 abstract "Abstract The effect of low levels of SO 2 (3, 5 and 10 pphm) on peroxidase was evaluated in foliage of Brassica nigra L., Phaseolus radiatus L., both SO 2 sensitive, and Zea mays L., SO 2 resistant. Control plants of Z. mays exhibited higher peroxidase activity as compared to control plants of B. nigra and P. radiatus . SO 2 enhanced the peroxidase activity in all species but the increase was least in Z. mays . Six weeks of fumigation with 3, 5 and 10 pphm SO 2 increased peroxidase activity by 32, 40 and 45% in B. nigra , by 25, 30 and 43% in P. radiatus , and by 4, 8 and 13% in Z. mays , respectively. Peroxidase activity was found to increase as a function of both concentration and duration of SO 2 exposure. SO 2 fumigation increased the intensity and thickness of individual isoenzyme bands without affecting the overall isoenzyme pattern except in P. radiatus in which the pattern of isoenzyme profile was altered in plants fumigated for 6 weeks. The sulfite turnover rate was faster in Z. mays as compared to B. nigra and P. radiatus . It is postulated that the high peroxidase activity and high sulfite turnover rate possessed by Z. mays provided a relatively high resistance against SO 2 toxicity." @default.
