- W2092502994 abstract "S everal symposia on antiarrhythmic drugs have recently been published in this journal. At the time of publication, the drugs were investigational in the United States and their use limited to a few centers. Soon, most of these drugs will be released for general consumption. Despite a lack of specific approval for use in pediatrics, these drugs will be given to children. In young patients, relatively little is known about the pharmacology of even the traditional antiarrhythmic drugs and less about the newer ones. Despite our experience in clinical pharmacologic studies with 9 antiarrhythmic drugs (digoxin, verapamil, propranolol, phenytoin, mexiletine, encainide, ethmozine, propafenone and amiodarone),l-g we find that with each new drug, we are learning more about the puzzle of pediatric pharmacology. One of the important emerging concepts is that we must calculate the dosage for children on the basis of body surface area rather than body weight. Since body surface area is not measured directly, its application requires use of a nomogram or calculator. Because reference to a table by a physician or use of materials varying from an abacus to a hand calculator is likely to meet with some resistance, the logical steps leading to the conclusion that body surface area must be used are presented herein." @default.
