- W2092565470 abstract "<h3>To the Editor.—</h3> The recent article by Frederick S. Southwick, MD, and Preston H. Dalgish, MD (243:1250, 1980), was another of a series of examples of total or near-total recovery from profound hypothermia despite the presence of all signs of death except rigor mortis.1The excellent discussion failed to mention one of the more effective, safe, and convenient methods to accomplish core rewarming—the use of overheated humidified ventilation.2-4This has been shown not only to prevent but also to reverse mild hypothermia (32 to 34 °C) in the operating room. In my experience, this method is also effective in treating severe hypothermia. To be effective, you must bypass the normal heating or cooling mechanisms of the upper airway via an endotracheal tube. The inspiratory temperature should be close to but not greater than 39 °C.4The thermometer must be placed as near to the patient as possible" @default.
