- W2092632206 abstract "Institute ofAtomic Physics, 76900 Bucharest, RomaniaG. BoulonUniv. Claude Bernard Lyon I, LPCML, 69622 Villeurbanne, FranceABSTRACTThe mutual static crystal field perturbations produced by near sensitizer and activator ions shiftthe energy levels and modify the radiative and energy transfer characteristics. The selective and discretenature of these effects transforms the ensembles of sensitizer and activator ions into inhomogeneoussystems and modify the spectral and temporal characteristics of emission from activator ions in sensitizedlaser crystals. These effects are exemplified for Cr3+ or Fe3+ sensitized em ision of Trn3+:YAG.Keywords: laser crystals, sensitized emission, luminescence decay ,Tm3+, YAG1. INTRODUCTIONSensitization of emission of weakly absorbing active ions with other ions whose absorptionmatches better the pump radiation spectrum and which are able to transfer the excitation to the activatorcould be an important means to improve the efficiency of solid state lasers. Generally a fast energytransfer from sensitizer (donor, D) to the activator (acceptor, A) is claimed in order to avoid the loss ofexcitation by intrinsic donor de-excitation (emission or multiphonon relaxation). The characteristics of the energy transfer could be determined from its effect on the temporalbehavior of D and A ions emission after a short laser pulse excitation in the D levels. Traditionally thesystems of D and A ions are considered as homogeneous, all the members of each system having identicalspectral and temporal (radiative) properties. In presence of direct DA energy transfer the decay of donoremission is given by a term exp[-P(t, CA )II" @default.
