- W2092671329 abstract "AFTER nearly nine decades of study, Ulysses can still surprise the researcher and reader with previously unconsidered allusions. The Odyssey, which lends Joyce's text an elevated history and noble precedent, is considered Ulysses’ primary intertextual element. However, Ulysses incorporates a broad range of literary sources, some from significantly less exalted backgrounds. The romances that construct Gerty's fantasies and the flagellation pornography that scripts Bloom's masochistic fantasies offers readers of Ulysses some seedy titillation which was—and continues to be—partly responsible for its popularity. Of the many pornographic sources in Ulysses, the similarities between it and The Memoirs of Dolly Morton point to Dolly Morton as a text Joyce once read and possibly even forgot, but whose influence is palatable and important.1 When first published, Ulysses’ marketing took two distinct forms. While the literary community received Ulysses as a profound modernist work, Sisley Huddleston's review in the 5 March 1922 issue of the Observer openly acknowledged the book's ‘Obscenity’; Virginia Wolf's critique of Ulysses’ combination of ‘ “Sex” and “high art” ’2 immediately captured the attention of a different audience. Among this audience was R. Burns, whose request for ‘any books dealing with Flagellation or Corporal punishment’3 illustrates Ulysses’ positioning in the pornographic and, specifically, flagellation book markets. The affects of Sacher-Masoch's Venus in Furs and James Lovebirch's flagellation fantasies are present in Ulysses and Joyce's personal writing. In a letter to his wife, Nora, he writes: Punish me as much as you like: I would be delighted to feel my flesh tingling under your hand … I wish you would smack me or flog me even. Not in play, dear, in earnest and on my naked flesh … To feel you bending down … and to feel you flog, flog, flog me viciously on my naked quivering flesh!!4" @default.
