- W2092790247 abstract "11 Franciscan Studies 63 (2005) FRANCIS AND CLARE OF ASSISI: DIFFERING PERSPECTIVES ON GENDER AND POWER St. Bonaventure University November 16, 2004 First of all, I must briefly clear two points included in the title of this lecture: Why Francis and Clare? Why gender and power?1 After listening to the warm and deep appreciation of Ignatius Charles Brady by Michael Blastic,2 one can perfectly understand why, in the framework of such a commemoration, a lecture about Francis and Clare is really appropriate. Although he was a renowned Bonaventurian scholar, the prefect of the theology section of the Collegio San Bonaventura also directed his attention to the founder of the Order of the Friars Minor as well as to the virgin of Assisi. The year 1953 marked the seventh centenary of Clare’s death. That year, Ignatius Brady gave a series of conferences published in the review, The Cord,3 and reprinted in 1966.4 It is still worthwhile to read them. One will see how the theologian was receptive to Clare’s spirituality. One will discover some considerations about the Franciscan vocation, which, for 1 I warmly thank Athena Godet-Calogeras for her attentive reading and her precious corrections. 2 See Michael W. Blastic, “Ignatius Charles Brady, OFM 1919-1990: An Appreciation ,” Franciscan Studies 63 (2005): 1-10. 3 The first one is: Ignatius Brady, “The Little Plant of Saint Francis,” The Cord 3 (1953): 1-5. 4 Ignatius Brady, Conferences on St. Clare of Assisi (St. Bonaventure, NY: The Franciscan Institute, 1966), 74 pp. I’ll quote the conferences published in The Cord in 1953 according to this volume printed in 1966. See also Clare of Assisi: Investigations (St. Bonaventure, NY: The Franciscan Institute, 1993); The Cord 45/4 (1995) entirely dedicated to Clare of Assisi, with an article of Ignatius Brady, “Clare of Assisi: Our Model,” 3-6; “An Unencumbered Heart” A Tribute to Clare of Assisi 1253-2003, Jean-François Godet-Calogeras and Roberta McKelvie, eds. (St. Bonaventure, NY: Franciscan Institute Publications, 2004). 12 JACQUES DALARUN Father Ignatius, was also a very discreet and modest way to speak about his own religious life. In that same year 1953, the Franciscan Institute published The Legend and Writings of Saint Clare of Assisi, an excellent translation of the Latin sources into English by Ignatius Brady,5 only the second American edition of these fundamental texts.6 The same translation of Clare’s writings was printed again in 1973 at the front of the volume Rule and General Constitutions of the Order of Saint Clare7 and in Francis and Clare, The Complete Works that Ignatius Brady published with Regis Armstrong in 1982.8 Ignatius Brady had never used the word “gender,” even if, in the last cited volume, one can find very subtle distinctions between Francis ’s and Clare’s spiritualities. The concept of gender is more recent than Father Ignatius’ first works. It comes from female historians, especially American ones.9 It explains sexual identity as a cultural construction .10 Given that the two saints of Assisi shared the same evangelical ideal, one wonders if their respective sexual identities can explain the small but significant differences one finds between their teaching and their behavior. So, I will study the cases, in the writings or legends, in which Francis encounters women or femininity and then those in which Clare encounters men or masculinity. For gender doesn’t exist in itself. It’s the result of a relationship. Actually, I will not have to speak about power, for the sources do it well. Gender implies a relationship to others, to the other half of the human race. And that relationship is never neutral. Discourse about gender is also a metaphorical discourse about power. As Michael Cusato has demonstrated so aptly, Francis (I add: and Clare) did not want 5 The Legend and Writings of Saint Clare of Assisi: Introduction, Translation, Studies (St. Bonaventure, NY: The Franciscan Institute, 1953), XIV-177 pp. 6 Before it, one can mention the works of Paschal Robinson: The Life of Saint Clare Ascribed to Fr.
