- W2092802158 abstract "In a large scale field experiment near Edinburgh, Scotland, soil and crop responses to alternative minimum tillage systems were studied in comparison with conventional direct drilling, reduced cultivation and ploughing systems. The two alternative systems of ‘scratch drilling’ and zero tillage/broadcasting offer, amongst other potential advantages, scope for reducing compaction by eliminating the use of conventional heavy machinery. Thus they may extend the range of soils and climatic conditions suitable for minimum tillage. Results from the first 2 years of the experiment (1977, 1978) showed no significant difference in spring barley yield (mean 7.5 t/ha and 5.6 t/ha for the 2 years respectively) between treatments on a sandy loam soil, classified as suitable for conventional direct drilling. Wheel tracking and poor surface tilth caused some reduction in plant emergence and a tendency towards yield reduction for ‘scratch drilling’ and, in 1978, for the conventional direct drilled treatments, but not for the reduced cultivation or zero tillage/broadcast treatments. Soil bulk density measurements showed the expected pattern of increasing compaction on the conventional direct drilled treatment. Alternative minimum tillage systems for cereals merit further investigation." @default.
