90 infants, from 7 days to 4 years, old, hospitalized in 1979 for an acute gastroenteritis have been studied. The prevalence of rotavirus infection was 44 % in the whole year. The prevalence is significantly higher in boy patients than in girls. 92,5 % of the rotavirus diarrheas have been observed in the winter months between november and february. The association of watery diarrhea, vomiting and fever has been observed in 83 % of the 40 rotavirus infections. The probability of rotavirus infection has been estimated as 0,82 when that association is observed in a male infant during winter months. An immuno-enzymatic assay (ELISA) has been matched with electron microscopy (E.M.) for the detection of rotavirus in the stools. ELISA has been as sensitive and specific as E.M., and might be the first choice test for the routine detection of rotavirus in infantile diarrheal disease." @default.
