Reliable cues are thus needed for habitat selection. In silk-spinning arthropods, silk can be used as a social cue to select an appropriate location. Silk can also provide information on the presence of related or non-related individuals. In this article, we compare the settlement behaviour of two strains of the two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae, in response to the presence of silk woven by an individual of its own or another strain. We then examined how individuals behaved when confronted with both types of silk (own/another strain) simultaneously. Both strains were sensitive to related silk. Settlement decision for both strains did not differ according to the origin of the silk. Mites used the silk as a communication cue for habitat selection and strain discrimination. Our results provide experimental evidence for the use of multiple social cues in the settlement decision by weaving mites. Choisir un habitat approprié pour vivre et se reproduire est une étape essentielle, en particulier pour des espèces avec de faibles amplitudes de mouvement. Des indices sont donc utilisés afin d’estimer la qualité d’un habitat. Chez les arthropodes tisseurs, la soie peut influencer la décision d’installation. Elle peut également informer sur le degré d’apparentement des individus présents en un endroit. Nous avons comparé le comportement d’établissement de deux souches de l’acarien tisserand, Tetranychus urticae, en réponse à la soie tissée par des individus appartenant à une même souche ou à une autre. Nous avons ensuite examiné les comportements de choix des individus lorsque les deux soies sont présentes simultanément. Les individus sont sensibles à la soie des congénères. Le comportement d’établissement ne diffère pas selon l’origine de la soie. Les acariens utilisent la soie comme un signal de communication pour la sélection de l’habitat et la discrimination de souches. Nos résultats fournissent une preuve expérimentale de l’utilisation d’indices sociaux lors de l’établissement des acariens." @default.
