- W2093169757 abstract "Abstract Maturation rates, fecundity, and generation times in Artemia fransiscana Kellogg 1906 from Lake Grassmere, New Zealand, were studied in the laboratory using up to 24 replicated combinations of temperature (8 to 32°C) and salinity (80 to 260%.) with adequate natural algal food. Fecundity was calculated from individual counts of offspring from separate replicate females over their reproductive life, and also by estimation using replicates each containing a number of females. The numbers of batches of offspring, and numbers of offspring per batch were determined, along with time spans for gestation period and length of reproductive life for females in each temperature-salinity combination. Relationships between these reproductive variables were examined using correlations and scattergrams. Polynomial prediction models were constructed for both time to 50% maturity and for generation times. Experimental generation times were used to estimate the number of generations per year in the Lake Grassmere ponds based on known temperature-salinity combinations over an annual cycle. Reproduction was primarily ovoviviparous, resulting in batches of nauplii, rather than resistant cysts which accounted for only 6.85% of the reproductive output. Some alternation of reproductive mode and evidence of composite batches was recorded. Results for ANOVA showed that both temperature and salinity have independent significant effects (at the 99% level) on time to 50% maturity, batch size and number, fecundity, and generation times as well as the lengths of gestation and reproductive life in female A. fransiscana. Temperature is the more influential factor for gestation and generation time, and also for time to 50% maturity. Temperature and salinity rarely acted independently. (Interactive effects of temperature with salinity were also significant at the 99% level with the exception of offspring per batch.) Results indicated that the temperature range 20 to 28°C in salinities 120 to 200%. are optimal conditions for maturation and for all reproductive variables considered. Artemia in the Lake Grassmere ponds were estimated to complete seven generations per year after overwintering as adults or juveniles, and were capable of very rapid and possibly exponential population growth during late spring through summer to early autumn, when pond system biomass was highest." @default.
