- W2093739807 abstract "Although citrate synthase (E.C. 4.1.3.7) has been extensively examined with respect to control by ATP (2), NADH (14) and fatty acids (12), limited knowledge is available concerning its control by the ionic strength and hormone levels which may be present in the intracellular environment. Partially purified citrate synthase obtained from plant tissue has been found to exhibit increased activity in the presence of low concentrations of the plant hormone, indoleacetic acid (IAA) (9) and there is evidence that in plants the hormone increases the level of citrate synthase activity in vivo (10). Although there is no evidence of an in vivo effect of IAA in mammals, it is of interest that pig heart citrate synthase is activated by IAA in vitro (8). Recent studies in this laboratory have shown that plant citrate synthase is inhibited by ionic strength with an indication that the inhibition resulted from a salt-induced change in conformation of the enzyme (6). Because of the importance of this enzyme in the regulation of metabolism, we initiated the following study to determine the degree of sensitivity of citrate synthase to ionic strength." @default.
