- W2093963361 abstract "I am puzzled by the letter from Dr. Rowley and his colleagues (February 28 p. 474) regarding the possible aggravation of familial hemorrhagic telangiectasia by oral contraceptives. I have recently completed a survey of 60 patients with this condition treated for 5 years or more with .5-1.0 mg ethinyl estradiol daily. Epistaxis was controlled to the patients satisfaction in most cases; side effects were minimal and included no case of venous thrombosis. A detailed report on these findings is soon to be published. The natural history of this condition is well recorded and includes an increase in both the number and the size of the cutaneous lesions at the menopause or male climacteric. The assumption by Dr. Rowley and his colleagues that the worsening of the condition was related to the small doses of estrogens suggests an unawareness of the normal progress of this condition. In my own series of patients there has been no immediate dramatic change in the appearance of any cutaneous lesion although both male and female patients receive extremely large amounts of exogenous estrogen. However such increases in both size and number are seen after about 5 years and would therefore seem to be quite unrelated to estrogen therapy.(FULL TEXT)" @default.
