- W2094204145 abstract "This chapter deals with dermatological drugs and cosmetics. The teratogenic effects of isotretinoin were recognized from animal studies prior to its marketing in the United States in September, 1982. The most frequently observed central nervous system (CNS) abnormalities are hydrocephalus and microcephalus; the most frequently observed cardiovascular abnormalities are interrupted aortic arch and ventricular septal defect; the most frequently observed ear abnormalities are low-set rudimentary ears, absent ears, small or absent auditory canals, and microtia. Other frequently observed abnormalities are cleft palate, micrognathia, and other facial dysmorphic symptoms. In non-exercising persons, there may be an elevation of CPK levels that may be transient (usually asymptomatic). Abnormal CPK values caused by exercise may be potentiated by oral isotretinoin (muscle pain may be observed). In exercising persons on oral isotretinoin who have elevated CPK values it appears to be of greater benefit to discontinue the exercise program first than to cease therapy." @default.
