- W2094241963 abstract "1675 Brachial artery flow-mediated dilation has been shown to have prognostic value in predicting cardiovascular events in atherosclerotic populations. The temporal responses of the artery throughout this technique may provide additional information with regard to vascular health. PURPOSE: To examine the temporal changes in brachial artery diameter to forearm occlusion and consequent hyperemia in apparently healthy adults (H) and those with diagnosed coronary artery disease or multiple risk factors (CADRF). Methods: Twelve healthy men (28 ± 7.85y) and seven CADRF men (60 ± 9.52y) underwent high-resolution ultrasonography of the brachial artery before and after 5 minutes of forearm occlusion. Results: Average baseline (H: 3.52 ± 0.46mm; CADRF: 3.88 ± 0.69mm, p = 0.19) and occlusion (H: 3.53 ± 0.49mm; CADRF: 3.8 ± 0.65mm, p = 0.20) diameter for both groups were similar. In both groups, a significant decrease in brachial artery diameter was observed approximately 10 seconds after release of the occlusion (p = 0.01). However, the magnitude of the drop from occlusion was significantly less in the CADRF group (H: 2.27 ± 2.28%; CADRF: 0.67 ± 0.61%, p = 0.04). Peak BAFMD was significantly greater in the healthy adults compared to CADRF (H: 8.19 ± 3.56%; CADRF: 4.35 ± 2.73%, p = 0.03), at approximately 50 seconds following occlusion. The magnitude of the drop following cuff release was significantly associated with peak BAFMD, (r = −0.47, p = 0.04). Conclusion: These results suggest a biphasic pattern in brachial artery response to reactive hyperemia. Both phases of this temporal response appear to be blunted in adults with or at elevated risk for CAD. This finding may further extend the use of the BAFMD model to include evaluation of structural and physiological alterations associated with CAD." @default.
