- W2094314824 abstract "1. In four series of controlled experiments, groups of starfish (Echinaster) were exposed for prolonged periods of time (up to 160 days) to sea water depleted of organic nutrients (especially amino acids) to small fractions of normal levels, and sufficient to promote net efflux of amino acids from the animals. Other specimens were exposed to similar water re-enriched with amino acids. 2. No pathological effects from the depleted water could be detected, either in behavior, size or biochemistry of body parts, or in the appearance of the epidermis. Likewise, re-enrichment of the water did not appear to produce any detectable benefits. Some general negative growth occurred in all specimens, which were not fed. 3. It was concluded that epidermal uptake of dissolved nutrients is not an essential function in any way limiting to this species. If exogenous substances are the normal main source of nutrition for the epidermis, they may be supplemented as needed from internal sources of supply. 4. Epidermal uptake may still prove to be of greater importance to other species, especially those that are more dependent on ciliary-mucoid forms of nutrition." @default.
