- W2094448874 abstract "Vickers hardness of partially stabilized zirconia obtained by the addition of ceria, dysprosia, gadolinia and lanthana to monoclinic zirconia, has been studied. The best hardness of 8.68 GPa was achieved for compositions 13 mol.% CeO2-87 mol% ZrO2. In this composition, the tetragonal phase was fully (100%) stabilized. Average grain size decreased from 2.5 μm (monoclinic phase grains) to ≤1.0 μm (tetragonal phase grains) on increasing the proportion of ceria from 0 to 13 mol%. The composition of ZrO2-Dy2O3 consisted of tetragonal- and pyrochlore-type (Dy2Zr2O7) phases. The tetragonal- and the pyrochlore-type cubic phases were stabilized up to the maximum of 55% and 25%, respectively. The composition 13 mol% Dy2O3-87 mol% ZrO2 had the optimum hardness of 7.64 GPa. The average grain size increased from 2.5 to 4.5 μm when the proportion of dysprosia 7.65 was increased from 0 to 13 mol%. The maximum hardness in the ZrO2-Gd2O3 system was 6.8 GPa for 13 mol% Gd2O3-87 mol% ZrO2. There was an overall 10% increase in hardness. Above 7 mol% addition of Gd2Q3, pyroclore-type cubic phase (Gd2Zr2O7) begins to form along with the tetragonal phase. The addition of La2O3 (up to 13 mol%) did not stabilize the tetragonal phase. However, a pyrochlore-type phase (La2Zr2O3) was formed and it was 59% at this concentration of lanthana. Hardness in the system (1−x)ZrO2−x·La2O3 decreased by 12% on adding 13 mol% lanthana. The grain size of the pyrochlore type phase varied from 5 to 15 μm for x=0.03 to 0.13 addition of lanthana in the composition (1−x)ZrO2−x·La2O3. This grain growth may be responsible for the degradation of hardness." @default.
