- W2094654235 abstract "An examination of models of consumer choice points out the existence of hierarchical choice processes. The model of hierarchical choice found to be most appropriate for the present application is the nested multinomial logit model. A nested multinomial logit model is developed for the purchase of a grocery product. The model is estimated with panel data from cash register UPC-scans on the purchase of coffee. The model has three levels or stages: type, brand, and size of coffee container. Part of the model is a detailed examination of the variables influencing consumers' purchases of store specials. The model's robustness is tested with eight data samples. The model gets better results with those data samples that only include those items for each consumer that the consumer does purchase at some point in time, as contrasted with data that includes all the items that are available to each consumer. The results are discussed for their addition to the increasing evidence of the use of hierarchical choice processes by consumers, an approach that contrasts with the linear compensatory model of choice, which is often assumed." @default.
