- W209491962 abstract "This chapter discusses the biochemistry of the mammalian plasma membrane. The phospholipids and sterols of plasma membranes are in a bimolecular structure. This bilayer need not be symmetrical and, in fact, there are specific data for erythrocytes indicating that the outer half of the bilayer is enriched in sphingomyelin, phosphatidylcholine, and cholesterol, while almost all the phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphotidylserine may be on the inner half of the bilayer. Fundamental to the biochemical approach to membrane structure and organization is a complete description of the chemical and enzymatic composition of the membrane. The plasma membrane is often obtained as large membrane fragments whose only conceivable origin is the plasma membrane. Electron microscopy can also establish the absence of distinctive intracellular membranes and organelles such as fragments of the rough endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria, and nuclei. The determination of enzyme activity is somewhat less useful in a positive way that is to determine the purity of the plasma membrane by the assay of its inherent enzymatic activity. To measure the extent of purification of the plasma membrane by the degree of purification of a specific enzyme requires that the enzyme in question be a true component of the plasma membrane." @default.
