- W2094970845 abstract "Abstract Rodding is understood to be the blunt severing of the connective tissue between the oesophagus and trachea of ruminants by means of a special metal rod in the form of an over-dimensional corkscrew. The purpose of rodding is to facilitate the removal of the rumen without rupturing the oesophagus with the resulting spillage of ruminal contents. The tests were carried out on the conveyor line in the West Berlin slaughterhouse to ascertain whether this procedure, integrated into the slaughtering procedure in overseas countries, could be introduced into the slaughtering technology practised in Germany. On the whole the procedure was practicable, although only with great physical exertion. Routine application on the Berlin conveyor line or in slaughterhouses with a comparable technology, however, does not seem suitable at the present time for technical, financial and personnel reasons. The damage in the rumen-reticulum area which occurred during the tests, supposed to be prevented by use of the rod, could be completely avoided through appropriate instruction of the personnel with regard to an orderly slaughtering technique." @default.
