- W2094980306 abstract "Macro programming in spreadsheets is an entertaining and effective tool in the application of numerical methods and so is of great value in undergraduate education and research. In this paper we discuss a macro for the numerical inversion of the Laplace transform given the values of the Hausdorff moments (equivalent to the Laplace transform) of an unknown function at a finite set of points. The original function is approximated by a finite series of Legendre polynomials and its expansion coefficients are determined in terms of the given Hausdorff moments. To illustrate the procedure, we use a simple test function whose moments can be easily calculated, and compare the reconstructed values with the exact values. It is followed by an application to the heat equation. A detailed description of the author's pedagogical experiences and suggestions is given and comparisons with FORTRAN and Pascal are made. One of the intentions of the paper is to illustrate the efficacy of macro programming even in the case of a non-elementary mathematical method. It is hoped that the method and the program themselves will be of use in undergraduate numerical methods courses." @default.
