- W2094995510 abstract "Abstract Recent studies on the effect of temperature on clubroot of Brassica spp., caused by Plasmodiophora brassicae, have demonstrated that temperature has an important impact on each component of the disease cycle under controlled conditions. The current study was conducted to assess the impact of temperature regime on clubroot incidence and severity on two short-season Asian vegetable crops, Shanghai pak choy (B. rapa subsp. chinensis var. communis) and Chinese flowering cabbage (B. rapa subsp. chinensis var. utilis) under field conditions. Each crop was seeded at about monthly intervals from May to September on a naturally infested site near Bradford, Ontario in 2008 and 2009. A soil-drench treatment with cyazofamid fungicide (trade name Ranman® 400 SC) was included at each seeding date to assess the interaction of fungicide and temperature. Clubroot severity was assessed at weekly intervals from 2–3 wk after planting until about 6 wk after planting using a 0–3 scale. Clubroot incidence and severity were consistently higher on Shanghai pak choy than Chinese flowering cabbage, but both host crops exhibited a similar pattern of symptom development. Clubroot severity was highest in the July seeding (warmest mean temperature), slightly lower in June and August, and lowest in the May and September seeding dates (lowest temperatures). Clubroot levels were also positively correlated with rainfall. Cyazofamid fungicide consistently reduced clubroot levels. We conclude that producers of short-season crops can select seeding dates to avoid losses from clubroot, even in heavily infested fields. Both moderate soil temperatures (17–26 °C) and adequate soil moisture must be present for the development of severe clubroot. Résumé Les études récentes sur les effets de la température sur la hernie de Brassica spp., causée par Plasmodiophora brassicae, ont démontré que, dans des conditions contrôlées, celle-ci a d'importantes répercussions sur chaque composante liée au cycle de la maladie. Cette étude a été menée pour évaluer, sur le terrain, les effets de la température sur l'incidence et la gravité de la maladie sur deux légumes asiatiques à cycle court : le pak-choï (B. rapa subsp. chinensis var. communis) et le choi sum (B. rapa subsp. chinensis var. utilis). En 2008 et 2009, chaque légume a été semé à environ un mois d'intervalle, de mai à septembre, dans un champ infesté naturellement près de Brandford en Ontario. Un traitement du sol par trempage avec le fongicide Ranman® 400 SC (cyazofamide) a été appliqué à chaque date de semis pour évaluer l'interaction du fongicide et de la température. La gravité de la hernie a été évaluée hebdomadairement à partir de la deuxième ou de la troisième semaine après les semis, et ce, jusqu'à environ six semaines après les semis, utilisant une échelle de 0 à 3. L'incidence et la gravité de la hernie étaient invariablement plus élevées chez le pak choi que chez le choi sum, mais les deux cultures hôtes ont affiché un mode similaire de développement ses symptômes. La gravité de la hernie était plus intense chez les semis de juillet (température moyenne la plus chaude), légèrement moindre en juin et août, et vraiment moindre en mai et septembre (températures les plus basses). Les degrés d'intensité de la hernie étaient également corrélés aux précipitations. Le cyazofamide a invariablement réduit l'intensité de la hernie. Nous en concluons que les producteurs de légumes à cycle court peuvent choisir des dates de semis leur permettant d'éviter les pertes de rendement occasionnées par la hernie, même dans des champs lourdement infestés. Quant aux conditions de sol, une température modérée (17 à 26 °C) et une humidité adéquate concourent au développement de graves problèmes de hernie.
