Abstract New spectrograms at classification dispersion for the region of h and x Persei, a region of the sky known to be rich in Be stars, are discussed. On the basis of spectroscopic appearance, the Be stars are divided into two groups. The first group is shown to contain Be stars of varying spectroscopic appearance, including at least one shell star and two stars on the main sequence. Stars in the second group, called extreme Be stars, are found to show very little variation in spectroscopic appearance and to lie in a band centered approximately 1.5 mag. above the main sequence. Several interpretations of the observations are considered, and the hypothesis that the extreme Be stars are rapidly rotating B stars undergoing rapid core contraction subsequent to hydrogen exhaustion in their cores is favored. The (B - V) colors of the extreme Be stars are found to have a positive excess of approximately 0.15 mag. Because no comparable deviation is observed in (U - B) colors, it is not possible to attribute this color difference to systematic temperature differences or to circumstellar reddening according to the 1/ law.
