- W2095050484 abstract "The segregation of retinal pigment cells from heart cells was studied in living mixed aggregates. Formation of small clusters by migration of individual pigment cells begins almost immediately and is largely complete by the end of the first day in culture. It continues at a reduced rate up to 50 hours. We have no evidence for independent movement by clusters of pigment cells, except those so tiny as to be just distinguishable from individual cells. Clusters grow in size by accretion, i.e., addition of individual cells and tiny clusters. When this brings adjacent clusters into contact they fuse to form a larger cluster. Random changes in the form of adjacent clusters also may bring them into contact, with resulting fusion. Once clusters have formed, they persist and have not been observed to disaggregate. There is therefore no support for the hypothesis that clusters increase in size by the addition of cells gained from disaggregation of other clusters. After approximately 40 hours in culture, clusters become more compact and rounded. Those that are in contact may coalesce into a single compact mass. Where contact is too tenuous, clusters may pull away from each other to round up individually. The relevance of these findings to the mechanisms of sorting out is discussed." @default.
