- W2095087661 abstract "This article outlines a text-based, interactionist approach toward writing and written communication. Writing and reading are described as processes of negotiation: Writers and readers communicate successfully when they utilize their textual resources to negotiate the mutually oriented interactional work that sustains writing and reading as sense-making social practices. A brief analysis of the introductory paragraphs of the working drafts and revisions of one college freshman writer's essay is offered to illustrate how key textual features function reflexively to establish and sustain—to account for—the evolving but mutually held rational grounds (i.e., the generative interactional contexts) of school writing and reading processes. The study offers implications for an integrated theory of writing and written communication by showing some of the ways textual processes function both privately and publicly to mediate context and cognition in written discourse. The study problematizes current product-focused orientations toward written texts and challenges prevailing conceptions of the nature of writing contexts and revision processes." @default.
