- W2095402635 abstract "Field teaching has evolved over many years and is now used for a wide range of activities. Many biology teachers make a substantial investment in terms of time, money and enthusiasm in ‘field studies’ as a method of teaching ecological topics in the UK biology syllabus for 16—19-year-old students. However, little is known about the effectiveness of field teaching, especially for this age group. Ecological field teaching can be a complex situation with many interacting factors affecting both student and teacher. A pilot study where the learning difficulties of students on a field course were evaluated revealed that there were problems in understanding certain ecological concepts. The ecological concepts and methods of assessment of some A-level biology courses, including a new modular course, are reviewed. Further surveys attempted to discover those concepts which A-level biology students and their teachers identified as problematic These surveys identified significantly different problems. Also a study of student reaction to selected items of a residential field course revealed concern about some aspects of the learning environment and preparation for the course. Some comparisons are made between Dutch and UK field study centres. These studies suggest that field teaching can be made more effective, and provide some guidance for teachers when planning field courses." @default.
