This paper argues for the centrality of metaphoric (or ‘poetic') thought; in questioning the hegemony of abstract, rationalizing modes it considers some post‐Piagetian approaches to thinking about thought. The poetry moves on to report an investigation into the teaching of poetry, restricted to the secondary schools of ‘Northtown’. From the limited evidence of this enquiry it is inferred that the vital activity of metaphoric thought may need more careful fostering in secondary education." @default.
