- W2095479416 abstract "A 29-year-old primigravida with premature rupture of membranes underwent ultrasound at 32 weeks' gestation. A transone 11 mm cystic structure, visible at the left nasal canthus, was diagnosed as dacryocystocele. No other anomalies were detected. The cyste decreased to 5 mm at 35 weeks' and had disappeared at 37 weeks' gestation. A healthy girl was born. Dacryostenosis at birth, caused by a delayed canalisation of the caudal end of the lacrimal duct (valve of Hasner), has a reported incidence up to 73%. It is rarely symptomatic because newborns usually produce no tears. Dacryocystocele is a relative rare anomaly, often confused with dacryostenosis. In this anomaly both ends of the lacrimal sac are obstructed. There is a dacryostenosis and an uncommon valve mechanism (valve of Rosenmüller) at the cranial end of the lacrimal sac, resulting in cystic dilatation of the lacrimal sac. The dacryocystocele is usually transone, about 10 mm, near the nasal canthus and only described in the second halve of pregnancy. Differential diagnosis include encephalocele, haemangioma, lymphangioma, teratoma, glioma, rhabdomyosarcoma and neurofibromatosis. These conditions can easily be differentiated by echotexture, size, localisation, colour-Doppler and time of appearance. The association with syndromes is extremely rare, but additional malformations should be excluded. Midfacial deformation, respiratory insufficiency or infections are rare complications after birth. Treatment consists of massage, antibiotics or probing. The prognosis is excellent. Since 1987 about 20 cases of dacryocystocele in utero are published. The resolution of a dacryocystocele in utero was only described once before." @default.
