Each of these schemes was eloquently and tenaciously defended by a cadre of devoted adherents, with the result that the classifications came to be perceived as ends in and of themselves rather than as devices of communication. While all agreed with the often cited credo than an optimal classification scheme should be easily learned, readily taught, scientifically valid, and clinically relevant, there was no general consensus about how these objectives could be best achieved. In particular, the principles of scientific validity and clinical relevance seemed to be fundamentally irreconcilable. Two of the major classification schemes (Kiel, Lukes and Collins) were firmly rooted in emerging concepts of immune physiology, and claimed scientific validity on this basis. Advocates of the other schemes assailed these systems, asserting that they lacked documented clinical significance. The resulting situation was one of chaos, in which communication between clinical centers and comparison of clinical trials were impeded by the lack of a commonly understood language.
