- W209590367 abstract "Publisher Summary The concept that noradrenergic and/or possibly adrenergic mechanisms are involved in central cardiovascular control is mainly based on results obtained with clonidine. It is well documented that clonidine reduces the sympathetic tone by an action on the central nervous system. In addition, clonidine also increases the vagal tone by facilitating the transmission of baroreceptor impulses at the level of nucleus tractus solitarii in dogs and cats. Therefore, it is possible that a noradrenergic or adrenergic mechanism modulates the transmission of baroreceptor impulses. This chapter discusses the centrally mediated cardiovascular effects of clonidine that are easily antagonized by two α- adrenoceptor blocking agents: (1) piperoxan and (2) yohimbine. Piperoxan and yohimbine are now referred to as α2 antagonists. Earlier, piperoxan was known as α-adrenoceptor blocking agent and was occasionally used in pharmacological investigations. The interest for this substance grew when it was shown to easily antagonize many central actions of clonidine and in addition to block preferentially presynaptic α-adrenoceptors. However, besides initial hypotension and bradycardia that is followed by tachycardia, the haemodynamic effects of the drug are not known." @default.
