- W2095990900 abstract "The objectives of the investigation were to determine if embryonic resistance to thermal stress could be increased through selection and if correlated responses in production traits would result. Two selected lines (H1, H2) were developed by subjecting the embryos of each generation to hyperthermia for about 24 hours commencing on the fourteenth day of incubation. Two other selected lines (L1, L2) were developed similarly except that the embryos were subjected to hypothermia. The treatments resulted in about 75 percent embryonic mortality. A contemporary control line was maintained under normal incubation procedures. In each generation of each line, a random sample of female progeny was produced for evaluating the production performance of the line. After several generations the effectiveness of selection was tested by subjecting samples of embryos from H1, L1 and control to each of the stress conditions and to the normal incubation condition. Hatchability of the lines did not differ, indicating that selection had been ineffective in increasing the resistance of the H1 and L1 lines to the thermal stresses at 14 days of incubation. Furthermore, the four selected lines were found not to differ from the control line with respect to age at sexual maturity, egg production, body weight and mortality in the growing and laying periods." @default.
