- W2096008064 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter provides an overview of the current understanding of the structural and dynamic aspects of peripheral protein–lipid interactions. The chapter discusses (1) the hydrophobic and electrostatic components of the peripheral protein–lipid interaction, (2) protein conformational transitions induced by membrane binding and by alterations in membrane lipid composition and phase state, (3) interactions between peripheral and integral membrane proteins, and (4) the role of fatty acylation and other covalent modifications by the lipids of peripheral proteins on physiological processes. Peripheral proteins interact with biological membranes either directly with the membrane lipids or with the hydrophilic portions of membrane-embedded integral proteins. The proteins that belong to the former class are usually basic proteins—that is, they contain a large proportion of the positively charged lysine and arginine residues. The binding of peripheral proteins to the lipid headgroups takes place via a direct electrostatic interaction with the basic residues of the protein. The presence of negatively charged lipids in the membrane is an absolute requirement for the binding of peripheral proteins." @default.
