- W2096023605 abstract "half of the total production area. Of the more than 22 cultivars planted, ‘Laetitia’, ‘Songold’, ‘Sapphire’, ‘Pioneer’ and ‘African Delight’ account for 47% of the planted area. A total of nearly 50 000 tons of plums are produced annually with 75% thereof aimed at the export markets, 22% to the local fresh market and 3% is processed. With the primary focus on export more than nine million cartons (5.25 kg equivalent) are shipped annually to mainly the EU and Russia (49%) and the UK (28%). This makes plums one of the most diverse fruit tree species traded internationally (All statistics sourced from: Hortgro Services, 2011). With the relatively short shelf life of plums and the geographically distant export market plums are harvested physiologically mature but unripe and ripening taken place in transit for often up to 42 days in a shipping container at sea. Thus, determining and monitoring of quality parameters in the orchard, pack house and delivery points are crucial in producing a product that is acceptable to the end user." @default.
