- W2096360385 abstract "The variation of fourteen soil chemical and physical properties of twenty soil samples from Andosols was decomposed into the contributions of seven soil constituents or end-members. The samples were from the slopes of the andesitic Turrialba volcano in Costa Rica. Factor analysis of the data explained 98% of the variance by six (orthogonal) factors. We replaced the factors by seven (non-orthogonal) soil constituents and their mass fractions through direct fitting. Although the physical constraints of ‘real-world’ soil constituents decreased the explained variance to 92%, the mean relative deviation between experimental and recalculated data improved from ± 11 % to ±8%. We tentatively identify the soil constituents found through this decomposition as pure organic matter (OM), volcanic ash, a sesquioxide mixture with 6% OM, an association of allophane with iron-silicate and 12% OM, and three different associates of about 57% mineral material and 43% OM, as dry end-members. The last three associations contribute to the low bulk densities and high moisture contents of these volcanic soils. These seven constituents appear to be realistic for the studied soils, so it appears possible to describe the complexity of a soil system with the aid of associates instead of pure constituents." @default.
