- W2096412802 abstract "The high amount of carbon present in waste can be reused, recycled, sequestered in sinks or released into the environment in different forms according to the diverse waste management strategies applied in different countries. When landfilled under anaerobic conditions, carbon is partly transformed into methane. The methane can be used as an alternative energy source or, when not captured, it is released into the atmosphere contributing to the greenhouse effect. The forthcoming essential turn in global energy supply will change anthropogenic carbon fluxes significantly, producing a marked impact on the biosphere and pedosphere as well as waste management issues. Through systematic manipulation of both carbon sources and sinks in all life domains and areas of operation, attempts should be made to enhance sequestration and slow down carbon release processes. Indeed, integrated waste management schemes and adapted technologies are already capable of providing a major contribution to this task. This paper describes several innovative promising strategies that can help reduce carbon emissions from final disposal during landfill operation and aftercare." @default.
