- W2096973048 abstract "This paper addresses Pilot-Induced-Oscillation encounters during the early development of the C-17A and steps used to address the issues presented. Most of the encounters occurred during the landing phase, and although not catastrophic, the large wing span of the C-17 exaggerates wing-tip to wing-tip oscillations close to the ground creating illusions of more severe oscillations. Common to most of the encounters is instantaneous large pilot control reaction to some external disturbance that lead to actuator rate saturation. However, some of the oscillations started with normal control inputs during high gain tasks that is more indicative of excessive phase lag in the control system. Drastic changes, especially in the lateral control law architecture, made to prevent unnecessary actuator rate saturation and reduce overall phase lag (time delay) did not completely resolve the problem. The final solution required significant reductions in control sensitivity. Time domain analysis of the entire non-linear system provided a better means of analyzing and correlating the results with flight test. Since these changes, there has been no report of any encounters with Pilot-Induced-Oscillations." @default.
