Non-axisymmetric magnetic perturbations allow for favorable properties of the plasma edge and plasma wall interaction. The new coils in ASDEX Upgrade can deliver resonant and non-resonant magnetic perturbations with the main aim of ELM mitigation studies. First scenarios showing ELM mitigation have been developed [2]. Nevertheless, the complex interplay of magnetic perturbations (MPs), edge currents, electric fields, plasma rotation, flows and turbulent transport is not well understood. This is the case for ELM mitigation scenarios as well as for the turbulent transport in Ohmic and L-mode discharges with non-axisymmetric magnetic perturbations. This paper reports about first observations on the non-axisymmetric magnetic perturbation effects on the turbulence at open field lines in ASDEX Upgrade. Ohmic and L-mode as well as ELMy H-mode discharges are studied. The plasma turbulence will be characterized by various probes (floating, ion saturation current probes, etc.) including measurements by a retarding field analyzer (RFA) to gain information on ion temperatures in H-mode discharges. The experiments will be discussed in context with observations at other machines like e.g. MAST and TEXTOR. Langmuir probes have been used to characterize the plasma in front of the outer limiters during ELMy H-mode discharges with and without MPs. The perturbation coils were operated in odd parity causing ELM mitigation. In the undisturbed plasma the ELMs occurred at about 200Hz frequency. With MPs the mean ion saturation current Isat at the limiters increased while the variance decreased. Large events (here 0.1A) became more unlikely while the most probable Isat value shifted upward from 0.02A to 0.03A when switching on the magnetic perturbations. Values of Isat < 0.01 tend to vanish with the magnetic perturbations indicating that the inter-ELM behavior changed. Medium size events (0.03 0.1A) were more likely with MPs and occurred at frequencies in the range of 100 1000Hz. Measurements in similar discharges with the RFA in the scrape off layer showed that the ion temperature drops during ELMs by about a factor of two when MPs cause ELM mitigation [3].
