- W2098070574 abstract "Fourteen years after the publication of Invincible Green Suburbs, Brave New Towns: Social Change and Urban Dispersal in Post-War England, Mark Clapson has developed his research into working-class suburbs with an in-depth look at the Whitley council estate in Reading from 1930 to 2010. The book looks at the entire history of the estate, including the planning stage and the delays in construction, the actual development in the 1930s, and the impact of war and post-war expansion. It then considers the impact of social change and the problems encountered. In addition, it also highlights how continuing social action and the growing importance of leisure shaped life in the area. The estate was initially designed for Reading's slum dwellers, unlike many other estates which were aimed at meeting general needs. Despite some issues about the size and design of the new houses, and the continuing problem of overcrowding, the estate provided accommodation which was in many respects far removed from the horror of the slums, a fact all too often forgotten in contemporary perceptions. He also highlights how, unlike many others, the estate did eventually start to develop vital community facilities, though he also continued to demonstrate the failure to provide important facilities for many years. Despite the narrow focus on a single estate, Clapson includes a series of nuances at the start and finish which place the study into a broader context, showing the complex reality of social housing and especially council estates. He also uses the history of the estate to show how national political and social shifts were reflected in changes on the estate. The estate became increasingly diverse, as did the country, but the essential point is that ‘community’ remained remarkably stable and cohesive. He provides an account which shows that life on council estates was not all negative, not all polarized, and not homogenous." @default.
