However, interpretation cannot be made out of clinical context as the older age group, in which this affliction is commonest, also has the greatest degree of asymmetric athero- and arteriosclerotic vascular disease, which may yield an equal or reduced transit on the side contralateral to the lesion. Disparate perfusion may occur in patients, particularly in advanced years, who did not suffer a stroke nor display neurological deficits. Increased perfusion on the side of a positive static scintiphotograph generally implies the presence of a tumor. This combination is not pathognomonic as three out of 96 strokes exhibited the same dynamics. Tumors can also be associated with reduced ipsilateral radioactive transit. Uncomplicated arteriovenous malformations are fairly characteristic as they show the highest concentration with the initial entrance of the bolus of radioactive material which rapidly diminishes during the washout and is seen later as a vascular pool of lesser concentration than the first bolus. Intracarotid injections of radiopertechnetate were found to be a useful adjunct to contrast angiography. Although lacking the resolution of radiography the radionuclide method is more sensitive to the presence or absence of the microcirculation. Time-activity curves over regional areas of the brain derived from a direct store video system are presented from intravenous and intracarotid studies." @default.
