The quantification of the energy expenditure of recreational surfing may validate the prescription of this form of physical activity, potentially encouraging more of the Australian population to become active. Six male recreational surfers (age range 23–36) performed an incremental maximal test on a swim bench ergometer, with heart rate (HR) and oxygen consumption (VO2) assessed. They also performed one 60 min surfing session in “typical” conditions. Mean HR was recorded for each minute and energy expenditure was estimated using the HR/VO2 regression from the laboratory test. Additionally, various time–motion characteristics were examined; specifically, time spent sitting, paddling and wave riding. Wave count and total distance covered (including drifting, paddling and wave riding) were also measured. During the surfing session, mean HR was 125 b min−1 (range 100–144), mean VO2 was 1.35 L min−1 (range 0.68–1.83), which was 57% of the laboratory determined maximum of 2.39 L min−1 (range 2.09–2.77) and mean estimated energy expenditure was 1705 kJ (range 866–2319). The time–motion analysis revealed that a typical 60 min recreational surfing session involved 34% sitting, 55% slow-moderate paddling, 8% fast paddling and 3% wave riding, with 11 waves caught (range 2–15), covering a total distance of 4137 m (range 2784–5088). These results suggest that 60 min of recreational surfing requires energy expenditure similar to that of moderate intensity walking or cycling (∼30 kJ min−1). The time–motion data revealed slightly different results to those previously reported for competitive surfers, potentially indicating skill and fitness discrepancies." @default.
