- W2099406966 abstract "Abstract Fluoride uptake was studied in continuously growing teeth and those of limited growth. Under similar conditions, up to twenty times more fluoride was taken up by the growing teeth of rabbits as compared with the permanent teeth of cats. Growth seems to be the dominant factor affecting fluoride incorporation, but there is apparently also some increase during the mineralization period. These findings demonstrate that the conditions for ionic exchange, the mechanism by which fluoride contained in the body fluids is incorporated into hard tissues, are much more favourable in newly formed tissues than in old established fully calcified structures. Considerable differences were found in the rate of fluoride incorporation between dentine and enamel of continuously growing teeth; the biologically more active dentine reacts much faster than enamel. In continuously growing teeth systemic reactions appear to be mainly responsible for fluoride uptake, both in dentine and enamel. Retention studies showed that the loss of fluoride from growing teeth is as fast as its incorporation, whereas no appreciable changes were observed in teeth of limited growth." @default.
