- W2099843979 abstract "T his book is a well-developed version of the author’s doctoral dissertation at York University, Toronto. The objective of this work is both to delve into the social location of the historical Josephus during his stay in the city of Rome, and to create a critical framework through which to assess his narratives (p. 26). In chapter 1, den Hollander starts with a concise biography of Josephus, drawing mainly on his works, Life and Judaean War . Subsequently, he gives a summary of the current scholarship on Josephus, pointing out that the trouble with reconstructing the historical Josephus arises not only due to ‘the limitations of the evidence’ but also to ‘the absence of a systematic consideration of the social circumstances of Josephus’ life in the city of Rome’ (p. 18). Den Hollander ends by addressing the potential contribution and scope of his research. Chapter 2 deals with Josephus’ experience of Neronian Rome, in his role as an ambassador with the mission of setting free the unnamed priests imprisoned by the procurator Felix. Throughout, den Hollander observes that: (1) Josephus spent considerable time in the city of Rome during his first visit; (2) he established contact with Jewish actors living in Rome and most likely with other members of the Jewish community; (3) he became connected with the Flavian court. Accordingly, den Hollander emphasizes that Josephus built social networks during his first visit to Rome that he drew upon when he returned to the city as a captive." @default.
