- W2100027563 abstract "Charles Sanders Peirce (1839–1914) was a founder of the pragmatism that came into being in the middle of the nineteenth century in the United States. Peirce had much impact on modern philosophical thought, and, according to Walsh, we should regard him as ‘one of the principal founders of modern logic’ (p. 1). Roughly speaking, the great work of Gottlob Frege (1848–1925) and Bertrand Russell (1872–1970) led the modern development of formal logic. Therefore, as Walsh points out, ‘the pioneer algebraic logic of Peirce and Friedrich Wilhelm Karl Ernst Schröder (1841–1902) was largely eclipsed until the 1940s’ (p. 1).1 In her book entitled Relations between Logic and Mathematics in the Work of Benjamin and Charles S. Peirce, Walsh focuses attention on how Peirce developed his own algebraic logic and on what kinds of influence were brought to bear on Peirce by contemporary logicians, especially George Boole (1815–1864), Augustus De Morgan (1806–1871), William Stanley Jevons (1835-1882), and Schröder. One of the most remarkable contributions of Walsh's book is that she considers Linear Associative Algebra by Benjamin Peirce (1809–1880), the father of Charles, and analyzes in detail the mathematical perspectives which Benjamin showed there. Few researchers have taken up Benjamin's work in the way that Walsh investigates his notions of algebra." @default.
