- W2100045118 abstract "Objective: To identify the familial tendency of endometriosis and its related disorders among the relatives of patients with endometriosis. Design: A descriptive questionnaire analysis. Materials/Methods: Questionnaires were collected from admitted patients with laparoscopically proven endometriosis and members of Endometriosis Association, Taiwan were analyzed for the affected rates of dysmenorrhea, endometriosis and adenomyosis. Patients admitted for surgical exploration for disorders other than endometriosis were also collected as control group. Data were analyzed using Student’s t test and chi-square test as indicated. Results: A total of 1002 cases of endometriosis and 561 cases of non-endometriosis were enrolled and analyzed. The general affecting rate of endometriosis in patients’ mothers and sisters were 10.6% for study group and 3.4% for control group, respectively (X2 = 28.82, p < 0.005). Analysis also performed to the patients’ husbands as another group of control subjects, which showed a prevalence rate of 5.5%, significantly higher than those without endometriosis (X2 = 4.95, p < 0.05). The rate of menstrual pelvic pain was also higher in the patients’ relatives than their husbands’ relatives (35.5% vs. 13.9%, X2 = 23.59, p < 0005), however, the prevalence of adenomyosis was not different in these two groups (7.4% vs. 5.0%, X2 = 1.07). Conclusions: This study proves a positive familial trend of endometriosis-associated disorders in the affecting group. Although study biases may be present that patients would be more aware to her own disease entities that increased the prevalence in the family members of their genetically unrelated husbands. Nevertheless the prevalence also was significantly higher in the affected group than those from their spouses. Although data suggested that environmental factors and emotional stress may play some important roles in the alteration of peritoneal immunity and decrease clearance of menstrual blood. The etiology of endometriosis is still unknown. Our investigation suggests that the family members of patients with endometriosis should be screened for the possibly higher prevalence of endometriosis and strategies to be made for the prevention and early management of this enigmatic distracting disease. Supported By: Endometriosis Association, Taiwan." @default.
