- W2100093103 abstract "An engineering inviscid-boundary layer method has been developed to predict aerodynamic heating for biconic configurations in hypersonic flows. The flow field can be fully three dimensional. A modified form of Maslen second order pressure equation is used to calculate flow field properties ahead of the body inflection point. Second-Order Shock-Expansion Theory is used to improve surface pressure prediction at inflection point. Surface streamlines are calculated from the inviscid solution, and the axisymmetric analog is then used along with a set of approximate convective-heating equations to compute the surface heat transfer. The present method is an inverse method in which the body shape is obtained according to the shape of the shock. Solutions for heating are presented for the flow on a biconic blunt cone and compared with experimental data . In general, the results are in excellent agreement. Since this method is much faster than VSL methods and Navier-Stokes solutions, it can be used in preliminary design and parametric study of hypersonic vehicles.
