- W2100097463 abstract "Molecular Pathology of Liver Diseases is part of the Springer Molecular Pathology Library Series aimed at providing comprehensible resources that bridge basic sciences and technology with medical perspectives and clinical applications for specific diseases. Dr Monga's new, hardbound edition on liver diseases nicely meets this goal. The book's chapters are organized to provide readers with clear and comprehensive information about the basics of hepatic cellular biology, followed by chapters covering liver development, growth, and senescence. After establishing the fundamentals of liver biology for the reader, the book then moves into specific types of liver injury, focusing on both non-neoplastic and neoplastic hepatobiliary diseases. Chapters are written by well-established experts in each area and are well organized, with headings and comprehensive bibliographies. An important theme throughout the book and many of the chapters is the use of state-of-the art technologies related to hepatobiliary disease, including strategies of tissue engineering and gene therapy. Liver biology and pathobiology is of interest to investigators from multiple disciplines; each discipline brings unique perspectives to the study of liver disease. Most groups that study liver disease include investigators from backgrounds ranging from cellular and molecular biology, genetics, and immunology to physical chemistry and biophysics, as well as clinicians and applied scientists covering a variety of fields of expertise. Importantly, the writing style and level of information provided in this textbook is very well-suited to this broad audience. Chapters on the cellular biology and life cycle of the liver are of particular importance in providing the essential understanding of how the architecture of the liver is specifically suited to carry out the metabolic activity needed to support the entire organism. Throughout the textbook, all the authors have used the strategy of illustrating their work with figures. In some chapters, the quality of the figures and figure legends is somewhat uneven, with the choice of font, color, and shading making them somewhat difficult to read. In contrast, many of the figures illustrating the cellular architecture of the liver, particularly the electron micrographs, are excellent and should be very useful to the visual learner interested in getting the “big picture” of how the liver functions. Comprehensive tables are also presented in many of the chapters; these should appeal to readers looking for information about specific molecules involved in the pathogenesis of hepatobiliary disease. The textbook is indexed to provide easy access to information; however, the indexing seems to be based on specific headings used in the chapters and is not always helpful for finding how specific molecular pathways are involved in liver disease. For example, microRNAs are discussed by multiple authors in relation to a number of liver diseases, but are not listed as a separate category. Bottom Line: In summary, the editors have done an outstanding job of providing a comprehensive set of well-written and interesting chapters covering the broad range information about the liver in health and disease. The topics covered range from basic research and technology to more clinically relevant topics of disease pathophysiology and progression. This text will make an excellent addition to the libraries of any basic or clinical investigator interested in a well-referenced and comprehensive resource on liver disease. In particular, this text will be extremely useful to a broad range of multidisciplinary investigators interested in developing a fundamental understanding of the liver and its function in both non-neoplastic and neoplastic forms of liver disease." @default.
