- W2100519400 abstract "In this month's Journal, President Chernoff asked the incoming Board of Directors to reflect on the theme for The American Dietetic Association's (ADA) new program year: “Celebration and Discovery” (p 396). I was gratified that the Journal is an important vehicle for so much of what the Board members cited, including lifelong learning, communicating our knowledge and expertise, and reporting sound science and research. I then asked myself: What do I celebrate and discover in the Journal’? Celebrating the Journal's reputation I celebrate that the Journal is achieving its mission of being “the premier peer-reviewed journal in the field of dietetics and nutrition.” Many authors have told me that the Journal is the first place they submit the results of their nutrition and dietetics research. We have earned a solid reputation within the scientific and professional communities through our commitment to publishing high-quality research. On February 22, the Today show cited a January 1996 Journal study (Lust KD, Brown JE, Thomas W. Maternal intake of cruciferous vegetables and other foods and colic symptoms in exclusively breast-fed infants. Pp 46-48) as an example of the many important research studies that have immediate application to society but are receiving little media attention. Discovering the Journal's applications Carol J. Boushey, PhD, MPH, RD, of Southern Illinois University, lauds the Journal's “widespread application.” She recently met a Marriott dietitian who instituted a new screening form she discovered in the Journal. Boushey also told of directing a student interested in bioengineered foods to ADA's position (December 1995, p 1429), adding: “Publishing the position papers is of great value.” (See page 391 for ADA's latest position — nutrition services in managed care.) Tracking professional trends in the Journal The Journal is an ideal place to discover and celebrate the active involvement of dietetics professionals in shaping the future of the rapidly changing health care field. Dietitians have become activists in proving the effectiveness of medical nutrition therapy through outcomes research and controlled, clinical trials as well as by collecting data in areas such as reimbursement. All of this has been reflected in the pages of the Journal. In this issue alone, Laramee comments on the dietitian's role in managed care (p 335), Swails et al propose revisions to the current ICD-9-CM codes for malnutrition (p 370), and Gallagher-Allred et al review research showing the positive effect of medical nutrition therapy on the critical problem of malnutrition in hospitalized patients (p 361). The Journal is also a key source for information on new settings for dietetics practice. Two articles in this issue cover the growing area of dietitians in home health care (pp 332 and 347). One emerging trend in the field is the use of “report cards” to help consumers evaluate a health plan's performance in terms of cost and quality. Dietetics professionals should become familiar with one such tool: HEDIS (Health Plan Employer Data and Information Set). Turner and Dwyer urge dietitians to work toward inclusion of nutrition measures in HEDIS: “If we fail to advocate for the inclusion of performance measures related to medical nutrition therapy in HEDIS, then nutrition will not become a benchmark measure of health plan quality” (p 380). I hope you take pride with me in the Journal's growth and achievements. I celebrate each new issue and seek to discover new ways to meet our readers’ needs. Judith V.
