- W2100609543 abstract "The development of methods of spot isotopic analysis might lead to the solution of many key problems in geology and cosmology. The value of such methods follows from the mineralogical and isotopic heterogeneity of natural geologic entities, the often very small size of mineral segregations, and their multiphase nature. One of the most promising approaches is the use of a laser for extraction of gases to be analyzed, especially the noble gases, in view of the high sensitivity of their subsequent mass-spectrometric analysis. A laser beam, because it is completely sterile, permits the amount of material required for analysis to be reduced to about 10/sup -4/ g or even less. But the most important advantage lies in the extremely local and short-time character of the laser pulse. The aim of the research described here was the realization and further development of the laser-probe method for expansion of the potential of the /sup 39/Ar-/sup 40/Ar method in the study of microgranular rocks as K-Ar geochronometers and the mechanism of argon migration. The apparatus used was a pulsed laser on glass activated by Nd/sup 3 +/ ions, with a wave length of 1.06 ..mu..m, operating in the free-generation mode. The maximal energymore » in the pulse was 0.5 J and the pulse duration about 1.5 x 10/sup -4/ s. The minimal diameter of the crater thus produced, with a 1 mm diaphragm, was about 30 ..mu..m. The magnification of the optical system of the polarizing microscope connected to the laser was 80 times, and the field of view was 2.5 mm. This instrument operates both in a solitary pulse mode and with a succession of pulses at a frequency of 0.4-1.2 Hz. Performance testing is described. 9 references, 4 figures, 2 tables.« less" @default.
