La macroprolactine, considérée comme une étiologie d'hyperprolactinémie modérée relativement fréquente, peut désormais être identifiée facilement, permettant au clinicien de porter un diagnostic cohérent avec une symptomatologie pauvre ou en rapport avec une autre étiologie. Prolactin (PRL) exists in blood under three forms: monomeric PRL and two high molecular-weight PRL-protein complexes, big-PRL and big-big-PRL or macroprolactin. When these high molecular-weight forms are predominant, despite their reduced biological activity, they can lead to overestimation of prolactinemia measured by immunoassays. As these hyperprolactinemias are not pathological, a simple detection test using polyethylene glycol has been validated to avoid unnecessary investigations. Thus, macroprolactinemia, one of the relatively frequent etiologies of hyperprolactinemia, can be easily identified, allowing physicians to make a diagnosis consistent with a poor symptomatology or related to another etiology." @default.
