• W2100844434 abstract "THE IMPACT OF A FRESHMAN ACADEMY SMALL LEARNING COMMUNITY ON STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT AND ENGAGEMENT This study focused on an innovative method of addressing the transition problems commonly associated with public school students' journeys from middle school to high school in ninth grade: the freshman academy. Freshman academies are small learning communities within large comprehensive high schools that isolate ninth graders and establish a more intimate program. The purpose of this study was to explore whether a freshman academy positively impacted the academic performance and engagement of its students, specifically in the areas of grade point averages, year-end grade in English, year-end grades in social studies, credits earned, failures, discipline referrals, and attendance. This study compared data from three cohorts of ninth graders at Springfield High School in Springfield, Delaware County, Pennsylvania: one that transitioned without an academy, one that transitioned with an academy, and one that transitioned with an academy and a one-to-one laptop program. A review of the literature on freshman academies suggested freshman academies do have a significant impact on engagement and achievement levels on both the high school and the college level. Data were collected on the three cohorts at Springfield High School, and MANOVA and repeated measures ANOVA tests were applied to test five hypotheses of the relationship of freshman academies and laptops to student achievement and engagement" @default.
