- W210142310 abstract "She dispenses stuffed animals and antibiotics. She treats hunger as well as coughs and earaches. She gives away clothes to keep out the cold. And for success in life, she prescribes massive amounts of education. Mariah Taylor, MA, RN, founder and director of the North Portland Nurse Practitioner Community Health Clinic, has stood between poor families and disease for more than 16 years. Taylor refers to the clinic as Clinic of Last Resort, place where those with no access to mainstream medical care may come for hugs and health care. The clinic serves about 2,000 patients, largely uninsured and poor patients, from birth to age 21, providing vaccinations, prescriptions, referrals, emergency care, emergency food, and, when possible, house calls. Receiving the NLN President's Award It is Taylor's commitment to the medically underserved that earned her special Presidential Award for outstanding contributions to community health at the National League for Nursing's 23rd biennial convention in Portland in June. Mariah's story is compelling and inspiring, says Dr. Sheila Ryan, NLN president, and the presenter of the award. A former welfare recipient and mother of three, Mariah worked her way through nursing graduate school. Since 1980 she has run the Clinic of Last Resort almost single handedly. She exemplifies the finest personal and professional qualities of the nursing profession. It is an honor to present this award to her. Dr. Ryan says Taylor, 54, is a wonderful success story as someone who has come out of adversity and has chosen to give back to the underserved population of her community. She is the inspiration for NLN's new scholarship challenge. In her keynote address, Dr. Ryan challenged all nursing schools to produce one Mariah Taylor each year from within their own communities. Dr. Ryan knows that Mariah Taylor is no ordinary individual. That starting free clinic in poor area is not for the faint hearted. But Ryan believes nursing needs more Mariah Taylors in its ranks. Looking for Taylor, pediatric nurse practitioner, puts in 8- to 20-hour days at the clinic, treating the disease of poverty as well as physical ills. This particular day, Taylor is looking for Barney inside the ear of 5-year-old Caitrin Klein. Caitrin's parents are worried because their daughter doesn't seem to hear them when they call. And Caitrin's mother, Andrea Klein, says her daughter's left ear has been draining. This worries Taylor. I hope you are wrong, Taylor says. Whenever she looks into child's ear, she explains that she is looking for Barney, the friendly purple dinosaur. What Taylor finds isn't friendly at all. An infection in Caitrin's left ear is causing it to drain. And the eardrum in her right ear is severely distended, indicating infection. Caitrin's parents are covered by the Oregon Health Plan, the state's health coverage for low-income people. But they've been bringing their children to Taylor's clinic for several years. She's friendly, Andrea Klein says. Klein has taken her children to bigger clinics, but they got shuttled from doctor to doctor. She trusts Taylor. When her next child, due in July, develops the sniffles, Andrea says, she'll come again to Taylor's clinic. Most of Taylor's patients are less fortunate than the Kleins and have no insurance. Taylor treats them for free or for whatever they can pay. No child is turned away. Earlier, Latino couple arrived at the clinic. Although Taylor speaks little Spanish, she could understand that they needed clothes for their child. She ushered them to walk-in closet where volunteers have neatly sorted donated clothing. The couple walked past bookshelf in the waiting room where cans of infant formula are there for the taking. Past hundreds of photographs of children who have come through the clinic. …" @default.
